Water Treatment Plant for the Removal of Fluoride and Hardness in Drinking Water
In 2011, under the guidance of Professor T. B. Dissanayake, a geologist at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), scientist J.G. Padmasiri, and civil engineer W.M. Jayawardena, Spectra Industries developed an innovative technological method for removing fluoride and reducing water hardness. This technology was introduced and installed at water purification centers with a capacity of 200 liters per hour in the Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, and Vavuniya districts.
After providing purified drinking water to communities affected by CKDu (Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin) and individuals suffering from skeletal fluorosis, patients experienced significant health improvements, enabling them to perform daily activities more easily and regain their ability to earn an income.
A research study conducted by the National Science Foundation confirmed that fluoride is the primary cause of CKDu. This conclusion was further reinforced by a national television news broadcast aired on 15.06.2023. Moreover, an independent expert team from China validated these findings, identifying fluoride as the main contributor to CKDu and recommending the adoption of an electronic method for fluoride removal.
At Spectra, we have also utilized an electronic purification method for effective fluoride removal. International evaluations have clearly established that heavy metals present in water are not responsible for the emergence of CKDu. The fluoride removal technology incorporated into these purification systems is a locally developed innovation by Spectra, reflecting our commitment to providing advanced and reliable water treatment solutions.
